Dave and I can read to him though, his mind is super sharp. When his speech permits, he tells us the most eloquent and witty jokes. To know David Hurles is to adore him. It's the saddest place to be in the world. We went to visit him tonight. There are moaning, demented persons wailing for no reason. Crickets and cockroaches crawl and hop around on David's pillows. The nurses steal what small possessions we have given him (the radio, a stuffed frog- all gone now). No air conditioning. The stench of shit covered bedsheets nearly knocked me on my ass when I smelled it for the first time. This place makes you so, so, so sad. A poor man's nursing home is just a holding cell for death. Instead of death taking these human beings away, they just sit and stare. So, so, so sad.
